Process
Day 1:
As a group, you are expected to discuss what visual culture and ideals are and their affects on the arts. You will be exposed to various artists who use visual culture within their sculptures to portray their ideals. In your groups of three to five, discuss what ideal you plan to represent with your sculpture. Along with this, you are expected to keep a record of the group's ideas, even if you do not use them. Also, you are expected to bring in found objects the next day to begin to create your sculptures. Groups should choose a category of found materials to work with, or mix and match, out of the following types listed below:
-
Wood (scrap pieces, old furniture, pencils, ect.)
-
Nature (sticks, leaves, stones, ect.)
-
Plastic (spoons, Tupperware, plastic wrap, ect.)
-
Recycled products (bottles, caps, cans, Styrofoam, raid your trash!)
-
Collage products (newspaper, magizines, books, glue, ect.)
Day 2:
Today is a work day. You will then be taught how to use camcorders or iPads to record images. One group member will record while the other students in the group compile the found objects and start creating the sculpture. The recording member may switch out with another member and pass the camera around. You are expected to keep a time log on who was recording on which day and for how long. You must have a time slot of five to ten minutes of recording time. Plan on bringing in more found objects the next day to build upon the sculpture.
Day 3:
The second work day. Another student will record while the other members in the group will compile the found objects and continue to build upon the sculpture. The recording student may switch out with another student. As a group, you are expected to keep a time log on who was recording on which day and for how long. Each member must have a time slot of five to ten minutes of recording time. Plan ahead to bring in more found objects the next day if it is needed to finish the sculpture!
Day 4:
The last work day. A different group member will record while the other students in the group will compile the found objects and continue to put the finishing touches on the sculpture. The recording member may switch out with another classmate. You are expected to keep a time log on who was recording on which day and for how long. Each member of the group must have a time slot of five to ten minutes of recording time. When your group has finished your sculpture, you should then combine their videos using a movie-making program such as Movie Maker and fast-forward the video clips by x4. Add appropriate music to enhance your film. The videos will then be exported and you will be expected to submit your movie to the class Art Blog to gain feedback! Feel free to comment on your friends and explore the finished sculptures!
Day 5:
At this point you should have submitted your collaborative movie to the class Art Blog. Now you are to gather your sculpture and critique each other’s sculptures using the knowledge they have built over the week. Have fun and do not hold back on comments. Do not be afraid to share your opinion!
